ANOTHER CHRIS WASHBURN IN THE MAKING?

Does history really repeats itself? Remember Chris Washburn, the 6-11 prep phenom and who later on had a stellar college career with the North Carolina State Wolfpacks? Well, he is the same Chris Washburn, the number three pick over-all of the Golden State Warriors in the 1986 NBA draft. Drugs killed Washburn’s promising pro career and he lasted just three mediocre campaigns in the NBA. He was eventually banned by the NBA in 1989 for failing three drug tests in three years.

Fast forward to 2009, another young, talented and upcoming NBA star is beginning to ruin his pro career. What is happening to Michael Beasly? The 6-9 former Kansas State stalwart had just completed his rookie season with the Miami Heat, who drafted him with the second over-all pick in the 2008 NBA draft. Beasly had a decent pro debut as he submitted norms of 13.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 1.0 apg in 81 appearances. NBA experts are all in one as far as predicting a long and bright pro career for the 20-year old Maryland native.

And now the disturbing news that left cage pundits in shock that Beasly has checked into a Houston rehabilitation center to seek counseling for psychological issues and apparent drug use. The kid is clearly in a state of depression and various reasons were speculated behind it. He has been in counseling in a undisclosed facility to address psychological issues and apparent drug use for as many as two weeks. “It's true that Mike is in Houston, and he went out there to work out,'' said Bruce Shingler, Beasley's longtime friend and live-in personal advisor. “Mike has had some issues. As far as all of the rumors out there, I can't tell you anything.'' Additionally, a disturbing twitter was posted by his father which says “Please pray for him, he needs it.''

It is so disheartening to hear this kind of problem for someone who is being looked up and idolized by many kids in America. Is this the price for jumping prematurely into the NBA bandwagon after spending just a single college season? Maybe and maybe not but the NBA must seriously dig deep into this kind of problem or else it’s 1986 all over again.

RIGHT OR WRONG?

Last March 13, I posted an interesting article in this blogsite about one of the revelations in the Houston Rockets team during the past season, shooting guard Von Wafer.

Wafer surprised a lot of pundits with his much-improved showing making up mostly for the absence of the often-injured resident superstar Tracy McGrady. His tremendous touch from the outside was a big help for the Rockets, which made a tremendous run all the way to the Western Conference semis and stretched the eventual NBA champs Los Angeles Lakers to seven grueling games. The 24 year old Louisiana native compiled averages of 9.7 ppg in 63 outings with the Rockets during the 2008-09 season.

Wafer made headlines anew recently when he bolted out of the Rockets and tested the free agency market and eventually signed a contract to play for Greek powerhouse Olympiakos (joining ex-NBA stalwarts Josh Childress and Linas Kleiza). He could have been a big part of the regular rotation of the Rockets this coming 2009-10 season but clearly, Wafer had other plans.

Whether he made the right decision or not remains to be seen. Herewith is an interview conducted by Raul Barrigon of hoopshype.com with Wafer on his thoughts and what made him decide to leave the NBA for Greece:

First time in Europe?

Von Wafer: Actually, this is my first time outside the U.S. and I can tell you: Athens is beautiful, amazing. I just saw the Arena where I'm going to play this season and it's fantastic. Huge. I'm just happy that people out here understand English (laughs).

Can you feel history around you there?

VW: I'm yet to see all the buildings and temples, but I'm specially excited to see the place where Olympics were born.

You were one of the most coveted U.S. players in Europe. What was the main factor for you in order to decide to accept Olympiakos' offer?

VW: I just wanted a situation where I can be a better player, a situation where I can help my family out a lot more... That was pretty important to me.

You are now among the best paid American players in Europe. What does that mean to you?

VW: That means a lot. I worked real hard in the NBA, just felt good to be recognized as a good player that plays hard. And I will play hard this season, as I always do.

As far as money, was any of the offers in the NBA close to what Olympiakos was offering?

VW: No, no. Not even close.

Before you decided to go to Europe, did you feel disappointed that it didn't work out with any NBA team?

VW: It is what it is. I guess they felt I wasn't good enough or maybe the economic situation... But I'm happy to be in Greece.

But you played well during the playoffs.

VW: Well, to be honest I thought it would be a lot different but it all happens for a reason.

What do you know about your new teammates?

VW: Well, I only know Josh (Childress) and Linas (Kleiza). I always watched Josh when I was growing up, watched him in the McDonald's All-American Game, in college...

What's your mindset going there?

VW: Championship. Everything else will be a disappointment. I want to win in everything we compete for.

How difficult will it be for you adapting to the FIBA basketball rules?

VW: Not at all. At the end of the day it's just basketball. That's what I do. Anything to do with basketball won't be hard to get used to.

How important was your last NBA playoff experience with the Rockets for your career?

VW: Very, very important. There was a lot of pressure, a lot of things that helped me to improve as a player.

What was the main feeling after losing against Kobe and the Lakers?

VW: Of course there was a lot of frustration last season. With Yao and T-Mac going down, I had to step up my game so the Rockets could go head to head with teams like the Lakers. Hopefully those guys will get better real soon.

BACK IN MOTOR CITY

Once upon a time, a gentle giant off the court but a dominating slotman and an immovable force in the NBA paint, led the Detroit Pistons to the 2004 NBA championship. So impressive was this 6-9 behemoth that he made mincemeat of a future hall of famer center that eventually led to the so-called diesel’s relocation to tropical hot Florida. So coveted was Ben Wallace that almost all teams wanted his services. The Chicago Bulls finally nailed him down in the summer of 2006 thus becoming the first one to leave the dreaded “fab five” of the Pistons which also included Chauncey Billups, Rich Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince.

From the onset, Wallace did not jive well with the Bulls and was a disappointment in his short-lived stint with the Windy City outfit. He was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers midway during the 2007-08 campaign. Since living Motor City, Wallace was not the same man himself as he struggled to adjust to the Bulls and the Cavaliers. Early in this off-season, he found himself being traded again. This time to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for the diesel man himself, Shaquille O’Neal. A day after being with the Suns, the Desert City outfit immediately put him on waivers and Wallace began thinking seriously of finally retiring from the league. Until a new twist in his NBA career resurfaces once again. Pistons GM Joe Dumars and new head coach John Kuester plus old teammates Prince and Hamilton wanted “Big Ben” back.

"I think Tayshaun called me first, but they were both giving me some coaching." Wallace said. "It's great to be back, my career took off when I was here, and I'm ready to see what will happen this time. I loved hearing how loud they cheered me, and I loved hearing how loud they booed me, that just meant they missed me a lot."

In his second tenure with the Pistons, Wallace will find new guys in new recruits Charlie Villanueva (from the Milwaukee Bucks) and Ben Gordon (from the Chicago Bulls) but will also miss three former teammates in Wallace (Boston Celtics), Antonio McDyess (San Antonio Spurs) and Billups (Denver Nuggets). "Chauncey was the kind of guy that could go to any team in the league and make a positive impact," Wallace said. "It was great to see what he could do in Denver." On his thoughts about the other “Ben” in the team, his former Bulls teammate Gordon, "I can't even tell you what Ben is capable of doing here, because there's no one in the league that works harder on their game than he does," Wallace said. "He'll be in the gym when you go home for the night, and when you come back, you'll have to drag him away from the court."

As a parting shot and a hint to what the Piston fans will expect from him this coming season, all Wallace can said is "they are getting the 35-year-old Ben Wallace now, and my hair isn't as long, and it certainly isn't as dark any more, they haven't told me anything about my role, and I'm not worried. When they call my number, I'll play the same way I always play."

Dumars and Kuester must be grinning from ear to ear.
